Unworthy and worthy

“For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.  For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

Romans 5:6-11

It is Valentine’s Day as I write this. There are all sorts of opinions about this holiday—everything from thinking it’s just a made-up holiday that companies that sell flowers and chocolate can use to guilt people into purchasing their products to it’s a legit holiday that celebrates love. But I think most people find it just a fun day just to take a little time to celebrate their love for their family, friends or significant other.

I think today is also a good day to reflect on God’s love for us. It is amazing when we actually stop to think about it!

This morning my husband and I had the privilege to be on the worship team. One of the songs that he chose for the team to lead the church in is a song called “My Worth Is Not In What I Own” (written by Keith and Krystin Getty). This is one of my favorite songs. It has a beautiful melody and the lyrics so rich. One of the verses in particular always makes me really think. The lyrics are:

“Two wonders here that I confess
My worth and my unworthiness
My value fixed, my ransom paid
At the cross”

Wow. We were all so unworthy. When sin entered the world because of the disobedience of humans, we became unworthy of God and His holiness. However, God also loved us! And He sent His only Son to die and shed His blood to cover our sins which then makes us worthy. As I’ve seen it stated before “God loves you so much He thinks you are to die for.” Our value is fixed. The price for our sin was paid. A payment we could never, ever pay! Jesus died for us to turn us from unworthy to worthy. We are worthy of His love! He loves us!

I think sometimes those of us who grew up in the church, reading the Bible and are familiar with the message of Scripture can become too accustomed to it and we may lose site of just how amazing His love truly is.

On Valentine’s Day we hear a lot about love. But what better love to think about and focus on than God’s unconditional love!
